What is a General Physician ?

General physicians provide long-term, comprehensive care in the hospital, managing both common and complex illnesses in adolescents, adults, and the elderly. General physicians are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, infections, and diseases affecting the heart, blood, kidneys, joints, and digestive, respiratory and vascular systems. An internal medicine physician’s primary responsibilities include heath maintenance and disease screening, the diagnosis and care of acute and chronic medical conditions, management of patients with multiple, complex medical problems, and serving as consultants to other disciplines such as surgery, obstetrics, and family medicine.

General physicians have a very broad range of medical knowledge and will tailor the treatment to your complaint. They will ask about you current symptoms, their onset, duration, character, relieving and exacerbating factors and previous tests and treatments. Other medical problems, medications, allergies, social and family history are also important. They can learn a great deal by simple observation.
